Our dermatology practice in Natick, MA, now offers NeoLux phototherapy, an innovative full-body treatment option for men and women with psoriasis, vitiligo, and other skin disorders. Light therapy using the NeoLux system is a safe and effective alternative to treating skin conditions with medication.

How Does Phototherapy Work?

A phototherapy treatment involves exposing the skin to a special type of light. The medical lamps in NeoLux units emit ultraviolet (UV) light at a wavelength that creates changes within the skin cells, minimizing or eliminating the symptoms of the skin disease. There are different types of UV light. Narrow band ultraviolet B (UVB) is popular because it doesn’t require medications, is very effective, and has very few side effects.

The benefits of narrow band UVB light include:

  • Light bulbs release a smaller range of ultraviolet light
  • Often clears the skin disorder faster and produces longer remission
  • Requires fewer treatments per week

Phototherapy is for patients of any age with moderate to severe cases of psoriasis, vitiligo, and other skin disorders that respond favorably to light.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

We create treatment plans based on the patient’s specific concerns and the severity of the skin disorder. A typical treatment plan may call for 2 to 3 treatments a week for 2 to 3 months. Each treatment lasts only a few minutes.

Does Phototherapy Cure Skin Disorders?

Phototherapy effectively treats the symptoms of psoriasis, vitiligo, and other skin disorders. These disorders, however, are chronic diseases, and flare-ups can occur periodically throughout your life. Each patient’s experience is different regarding how long symptoms remain cleared. If symptoms return, you can resume phototherapy treatments.
