Milia is a cluster of milium cysts that are often found around the eyes, cheeks, and nose. A milium cyst is a small, white bump. These can occur in people of all genders, skin types, and ethnicities, but primarily in babies. It is often referred to as baby acne. Milia are small cysts made of keratin that is trapped underneath the surface of the skin. Keratin is a protein in the hair and nails. It can feel firm and rough when built-up underneath the skin. At Essential Dermatology, we offer milia removal through our Aesthetician Services in Natick to help people from Wellesley, Weston, Wayland, and Framingham, MA, have clear, smooth skin again.

What Causes Milia?

The cause is unknown as to why infants get milia. When this skin condition occurs in children and adults it is often due to skin damage caused by burns. These types of injuries compromise the skin’s natural exfoliation process which allows for milia to form. Some skincare procedures may also cause milia.

Symptoms of Milia

  • Small bumps
  • Colored white
  • Textured or raised
  • Hard to remove

Can Milia Be Removed?

Most of the time milia goes away on its own within a few weeks. If it becomes persistent and bothersome, talk to Essential Dermatology on how to get treatment. Typically milia are removed during a steam facial treatment, a small needle and extractor will be used to remove the contents of the cysts. This allows the skin to heal. Avoid trying to remove the milia on your own as this can cause scarring.
