At Essential Dermatology, with locations in Natick, Marlborough, and Needham, Massachusetts, we have invested in advanced therapies to dramatically transform your skin’s appearance, feel, and quality without the risks, recovery, and downtime associated with laser systems. So, when looking for “laser treatments near me in MetroWest, Massachusetts,” we encourage you to consider optimal results and the best experience in improving your skin. Below, we walk you through four steps in this journey with the UltraPulse® CO2 laser by Lumenis.
This technology is characterized as a fully and/or fractional ablative laser. Since it can treat deeply but a fraction of the skin at a time (as a fractional laser), many types of patients with a range of concerns can be addressed safely and effectively. Our Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Michael Krathen, can also customize the procedure due to the many settings or modes available within this system. Again, this feature makes UltraPulse® an appropriate treatment for many patients. It is adaptable to various conditions, and Dr. Krathen can also adjust the settings to support a safe and predictable treatment experience for patients with diverse skin types and skin tones. Depending on the setting, the UltraPulse® may improve the appearance of:
We’ll explain what to expect and do at every step. These are general guidelines, as every treatment is personalized. You may need to adjust medications beforehand. You must be especially strict about sun avoidance and protection in the weeks leading up to treatment. It’s also helpful to have healing ointments and gentle skincare products ready for aftercare.

Your experience depends on the custom settings used. Some modes target stubborn conditions like scars and deep wrinkles and may cause more extensive side effects than modes used for finer lines. Treatment involves cleansing the skin and applying an anesthetic and/or sedation. Once numb and relaxed, the laser targets trouble spots, encouraging cell turnover and collagen production. You may feel warmth as the laser glides across your skin. Some treatments take just twenty minutes. Before you leave, we hydrate your skin—moisturizing is essential to healing.
Follow all post-treatment instructions specific to your session. Redness and other effects typically subside for less intensive treatments in three to five days. Makeup can be worn if your skin isn’t overly sensitive. Deeper modes may result in small dots, pinkness, swelling, itching, or peeling that lasts up to a week. We’ll guide you on how to soothe and cleanse the area and when to resume strenuous or heat-related activities like hot tubs or saunas. Sunscreen and sun avoidance are especially important post-treatment due to increased photosensitivity. You’ll notice immediate improvements, with deeper changes appearing in the following months.
