What Is a Skin Lesion?

Skin lesion is a general medical term used to describe spots, bumps, warts, or other growths that can be flat or raised on the skin anywhere on the face and body. A lesion may also be clear or contain pigment. Typically made up of cells, lesions can extend beneath the skin’s surface to various depths within the dermis (the deeper skin layers).

Lesions can be caused by a range of factors, including the natural aging process.

Different Types of Skin Lesions

small bumps on skin
raised mole on skin
dry raised lesion on skin

CellFX can treat multiple types of benign skin lesions. These include:

  • Moles
  • Seborrheic keratoses
  • Dermatofibroma
  • Warts
  • Sebaceous hyperplasia

Dr. Krathen examines the growth to determine its specific nature before treatment. He may recommend a biopsy if there is any uncertainty about the lesion.

CellFX is currently undergoing investigation for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma.

How Does a CellFX Treatment Work?

Traditional lesion removal treatments use heat, freezing temperatures, or chemicals and can damage healthy skin tissue without necessarily treating the lesion below the skin’s surface. The innovative, patented technology used by CellFX—called Nano-Pulse Stimulation™ (NPS)—is unique because it works at the cellular level where the skin lesion resides. CellFX delivers extremely rapid pulses of electrical energy to the treatment area, altering cells and stimulating a gradual clearing of the abnormal cells. New cells regenerate, and the healthy collagen foundation remains unharmed.

Can CellFX Treat Multiple Lesions in One Session?

Because CellFX treats each lesion in a matter of seconds, patients with multiple lesions can get them all treated in a single procedure. We’ll design a customized treatment plan after examining your skin.

What Should You Expect During Treatment?

To ensure patients remain comfortable, Dr. Krathen numbs the treatment area with a local anesthetic before beginning a CellFX treatment. After customizing the procedure by selecting the appropriate tip for the device and adjusting how deep to deliver the electrical pulses, Dr. Krathen places the treatment tip on each lesion. The patient may experience mild sensations such as tapping, spasms, or minor twitching as the energy pulses are delivered. The treatment of each lesion takes only 10 to 15 seconds. Depending on the number of lesions being treated, the procedure may take up to 15 minutes.

Generally, most patients can return to normal activity immediately after the appointment. You may need to wear a small bandage and/or ointment to protect the area during the initial healing process.
